Giving back, one step at a time

Walking 200km for underprivileged children's education in the Dominican Republic
Project overview

The Colonial Zone to Coco Bongo

Monday 28th October - Saturday 2nd November

Walk for Education is a transformative journey aimed at raising crucial funds and awareness for underprivileged children's education in the Dominican Republic. Spanning 200 kilometers from the historic Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo to Coco Bongo in Punta Cana, this unprecedented 6-day walk to take place in late 2024 embodies the spirit of giving back. Through this monumental effort, we aim to make a lasting impact on the lives of these children, providing them with the educational opportunities they deserve.

Children not
in school

In 2022, there were over 90,000 children in the Dominican Republic not enrolled in school.

Education statistics

What we know

Minimum and living wages

The minimum wage in the Dominican Republic is $0.84 USD and a living wage is just $2.83/hr USD

From our experience

Based on our experience, most families of the students we serve live on about $10 USD per day

Funds raised

How we will use the money

It costs $540 per year to provide education for one child. The funds raised through the Walk for Education initiative will directly support children from families who cannot afford to send them to school. Once sponsored, these children will enrol in 2nd Mile Missions' 'Hope Academy', receiving the education and opportunities they deserve.

Sponsorship provides a child with the opportunity to attend school without burdening their family with tuition expenses. Attending a 2nd Mile Missions school gives students the opportunity to grow academically, socially, physically, emotionally and spiritually in a safe environment.

Our partner charity

2nd Mile Missions began with a subtle feeling of discontent that grew into a God-sized vision planted in the hearts of Rod & Nancy Wildman during a family vacation in the Dominican Republic in 2006.

Real life

A life-changing story

"Sponsorship has been transformative for me. Growing up in poverty in Monte Verde, education at Second Mile changed everything. I wanted to be someone better and today I can say with great pride that I am not just one of the crowd, all thanks to the education I have received and all those wonderful people. Today, as a sponsorship coordinator, I aim to give back and be a beacon of hope for others in my community, showing them that there is always a path to a better future."

An introduction to myself

Hola! I'm Callum, from England, I have lived in the Dominican Republic for almost two years, and since then, I have seen with my own eyes the need for change. Whilst tourism is booming in this country, too many young children are going without the most basic education - this has to change. With this challenge I have set myself, I am wanting to make a generational difference. By partnering with '2nd Mile Missions', this will give the children of this country the best chance of succeeding.
